Figures, Rudiments, Lower Grammar
When they reach Figures (year 7 at age eleven), we introduce students from St Mary’s Hall to English lessons taught by specialist Stonyhurst College teachers.
We encourage students to develop the skills they will need to successfully complete their IGCSE courses and our aim is to
- consolidate, reinforce and refine core skills already learned
- create space for original and interesting work before the IGCSE years
- nurture an enjoyment of reading
We set tasks which focus on Reading, Analytical Writing, Creative Writing and Speaking and Listening, as well as basic spelling and develop punctuation skills.
Pupils analyse a wide range of genres, including non-fiction, fiction, drama and poetry to improve their comprehension skills and to learn to write appropriately.
All classes study a Shakespeare play during this period, and have access to the extraordinary resource of the First Folio. Pupils also enter annual Speaking and Elocution Competitions to experience addressing an audience.
