Geography is a very popular subject choice at Stonyhurst, influenced not only by our facilities and teaching team but also our location amidst the stunning scenery of the Ribble Valley, Forest of Bowland and the South Pennines.
As a subject choice, Geography is multi-disciplinary, drawing together many parts of the academic curriculum. Geography provides a perfect complement to the other disciplines, since it takes key concepts from the social sciences, such as economics, as well as the pure sciences, and uses them in the study of mankind and his relationship with the environment.
Fieldwork is a vital component of Geography and the course includes numerous opportunities: In Lower Line, pupils take place in a local field study as part of their controlled assessment. In Higher Line there are further opportunities for Fieldwork experience, including a residential trip to the Lake District as part of the Geographical Skills unit, reinforcing and bringing to life, some of the theory studied in the two AS modules. There is also the opportunity for a residential field trip abroad to destinations such as Morocco, Iceland and Italy.
