Grammar and Syntax
At GCSE, pupils follow the AQA GCSE French course with its associated software package Kerboodle. Link to AQA website.
Topics covered are: health, diet, well-being, the dangers of tobacco, alcohol and drugs; relationships and choices: family, others; the future, opportunities, wealth and poverty.
Grammar points covered are: consolidation of the present tense, negatives, question words and forms, reflexives, the future tense and comparisons. Students are assessed in speaking and writing at the end of the year.
In their Syntax year, students cover the topics of Free Time and Leisure, Fashion and School Uniform, Holidays and Holiday Activities. Considerable time is spent on the tenses: past, present and future; agreement of adjectives and structures. All the vocabulary is available on Quizlet, our online learning tool.
During the year, four controlled assessments are completed:
Paper 1: Listening: 45 minutes written exam (30 minutes at Foundation Level). This is worth 25% of the total GCSE.
Paper 2: Speaking: 10-12 minutes + preparation time (7-9 minutes at Foundation Level). This is worth 25% of the total GCSE.
Paper 3: Reading: 1 hour written exam (45 minute at Foundation Level). This is worth 25% of the total GCSE.
Paper 4: Writing: 1 hour and 15 minutes exam (1 hour at Foundation Level). This is worth 25% of the total GCSE.
