Inspirational pupil is nominated for national award

Caroline Shorthouse’s academic and sporting achievements make impressive reading for any teenager, but they are astonishing for someone who has the life-threatening disease cystic fibrosis (CF).

The 16-year-old Syntax (Year 11) Stonyhurst College pupil, has been nominated for a Breathing Life Award and, as well as being filmed for Sky Real Lives, she will attend a star-studded awards ceremony in London on 28th May.

Caroline’s achievements include an Art Scholarship, a Music Exhibition and an Academic Scholarship to Stonyhurst. She also plays hockey and will be touring South Africa later this year. As a member of the Combined Cadets Force, she has experienced 24-hour walking expeditions and adventure training camp and has also taken part in tactics, ambush drills, weapon handling and a 48-hour exercise.

The Cystic Fybrosis Trust acknowledges her courage and positive attitude: “Caroline has an enthusiasm that can only be admired and simply gets on with her life in the face of medical problems.”

When told of her nomination, Caroline responded: “Why me? I have lived with cystic fibrosis all my life but I do realise how lucky I am to be relatively healthy compared with others. I am looking forward to the awards ceremony and, in particular, to meeting others who live with cystic fibrosis.”

Caroline has been nominated for the Adult Fighting Spirit Ward, for which there are two other nominees, Sophie Jebb (20) from Guildford, Surrey, and Cara Doran (29) from Dunbarton, Scotland.

The 13th annual Breathing Life Awards will be hosted by Carol Smiley and Dr David Bull and will be attended by an array of celebrities from TV, sport and music.

Sky Real Lives (channel 253) will broadcast the ceremony on Sunday 1st June and celebrate the outstanding achievements of inspiring people that have CF. A TV crew visited Stonyhurst on Wednesday 16th April to film Caroline for inclusion in the programme.
