The new academic year opened today with Mass in St Peter’s Church, attended by all pupils, staff and several parents.
The readings were read by the Heads of the Line, John Messent and Caroline Shorthouse and the prayers were read by Gabriel Strain and Beattie Smith, the new Head Boy and Head Girl of St Mary’s Hall. During Communion, the Choir (already in good voice) sang Vaughan Williams’O Taste and see that the Lord is good'.
Father Twist, the College Chaplain, spoke in his homily of the distinction between speaking a language and meaningful communication, and the need to empathise, perceive and truly listen to other people if we are to avoid or resolve conflict. Stonyhurst not only teaches languages but also, as a Christian community, values every individual, as a potential source of God’s wisdom.
