Week of Guided Prayer 2009

A Week of Guided Prayer for

STONYHURST

18th- 25th September

If you find it hard to pray then a Week of Guided Prayer may be just what you need.... Over 30 staff or Rhetoricians took part last year. If you took part, please talk to others about it in the days ahead.

This is just to let you know that it is starting at the end of this week.
More details to follow shortly but do take a look at the attachments to find out more.

Important time to note is the Introductory Meeting: 12.45-1.45 Friday 18th Sept. Emmaus Centre. Packed lunches will be available. If you cannot make this but still want to take part, please let me know. Lots of flexibility with this!

You might like to give it some thought in the next day or two. Below you will find some answers to frequently asked questions

What is a Week of Guided Prayer?
It’s a week-long retreat in daily life involving: a time of prayer (aiming at 20—30 minutes) daily half-hour individual meeting with an experienced prayer guide (someone from outside of the College who is trained in this work of listening and asking helpful questions about your life and prayer. Meet with the guide on Mon-Fri).

Who is it for?
Anyone who is already Christian and who wants to deepen their prayer life, or someone who is not sure what they believe but is willing to take a risk and seriously explore the reality of God.  Either way, it is for any generous soul willing to commit to the elements of the week.  We can work with between 8 and 24 participants.

What is the programme?
As well as trying to pray for up to half-an-hour each day, reviewing how that prayer time went and meeting your prayer guide most days, there are other components of the week.  Introductory and closing meetings top and tail the week with helpful suggestions.   There will usually be optional workshops put on through the week on Ways of Praying, Images of God, Discernment and Decision Making.

Why do it?
We (the guides) have yet to meet someone who generously gave themselves to the retreat and was not delighted they had done so.  Even people who only took part because they felt sorry for their chaplain have got a lot out of the week.  We encounter a God who wants to meet us and this is always life changing.  Any retreat deepens our relationship with God.  Nothing is more crucial for us and our world than this.  It can also be a great help in making or confirming decisions, big or small.

Will it affect my studies or work?
Yes and no.  You’ll be even busier that week because of these extra demands, hence the need to be generous.  The retreat runs alongside your normal week, however, so you won’t miss any classes, meetings, work commitments or housework responsibilities.  Sorry!

How do I sign up?
As soon as you know you want to participate give your name to the College Chaplains.  It helps the organisers to know how many are taking part as soon as possible.  We can still sometimes take people right up to the last day.

But I don’t know how to pray
Join the club!  Not a problem.  That’s a great start.  Come and see!
