Stonyhurst is the first school in the North West to sign up to an innovative Social Enterprise company programme, run by the Young Enterprise organisation.
A company called SCRAP, which stands for Stonyhurst College Re-using and Producing, has been formed by twelve Poets, and its aim is to use recycled materials as much as possible, increasing awareness of recycling within the College community. The majority of their profits and assets will be given to a charity of their choice at the end of the year.
“This project means that we can help raise awareness of recycling and improve our carbon footprint at the same time as learning about social enterprise,” said Charlie McDermott, the company’s Managing Director. He is already developing an exciting new product using scrap metal.
The scheme is in response to a Government pledge to increase awareness of social enterprises in the UK. A preliminary team-building and selection activity was held a few weeks ago and the main task was to create a new brand of bottled water and produce a 30- second TV commercial – all in 25 minutes.
