Public Speaking success
Adaobi Anah recently won ‘Best Chairperson’ in the Business and Professional Women's Association Public Speaking Competition, held at the Foxfields Hotel, Billington. She was part of a Stonyhurst team which addressed the subject of the English language and how we use or misuse it. Adaobi opened the event, introduced herself and the speakers, took questions and then summarised the discussion; she was presented with a gavel and a gift token. The whole team won through to the next round, which will take place at the end of February.
LAMDA results
The LAMDA (The London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts) examination in Public Speaking provides excellent preparation for competitions of this kind. There are three stages, Bronze, Silver and Gold, and all must be taken in sequence. Candidates have to prepare 2 speeches: one political, for an audience with an opposing view, and one on a more light-hearted theme. They are also given the title of a speech they then have 15 minutes to prepare, and are questioned about the art of public speaking.
Vanessa Platt (Rhetoric) passed Silver with merit
Jack Agnew (Syntax) passed Silver with merit
Sophie le Breton (Rhetoric) passed Silver with distinction
Adaobi Anah (Rhetoric) passed Silver with distinction
Jose Rosillo Caballos (Rhetoric) passed Silver with distinction
Patrick Hoffmann (Poetry) passed Bronze with distinction
Mrs Patricia Massey prepares students for these examinations and for the Public Speaking Competition. Congratulations to all!
