The seventh Spanish Exchange at Stonyhurst College is underway and our partnership with the San Jose Jesuit School in Durango continues. Sixteen Grammarians (Year 10) have just hosted their Spanish partners of the same age for two weeks and will visit Durango, in the Basque region of northern Spain, in March. Our Spanish guests attended lessons with their partners as well as visiting York, Old Trafford Football Ground and Manchester city centre. Other activities have included an English cookery lesson, an introduction to rugby, a historical tour of Stonyhurst and a treasure hunt around Clitheroe.
This year the Spanish Exchange has won a European, Comenius grant from the British Council. For this, San Jose and Stonyhurst have jointly begun a two year project exploring university education and the role of local companies in providing opportunities for young people. Competition for Comenius funding is strong, so this is a significant achievement.
Trips to facilitate the successful completion of the Comenius Project were to UCLAN in Preston and WEC Group in Darwen, to enable pupils to learn more about English university education and the prospects offered by local companies to young people in today's world. The latter also incorporated a Tour of Ewood Park Football Ground as WEC is one of the Stand Sponsors. Senor Pablo Martin, an English teacher from San Jose, said “It was interesting for our students to see the internationalism of UCLAN, as in Spain, students tend to stay close to home for their university education. We have had a great time at Stonyhurst and many are asking to stay longer!”
