Outdoor Activities
We are able to offer a wide range of outdoor pursuits thanks to a very active Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme in place.
In keeping with most independent schools, Stonyhurst has its own Cadet Corps which is one of the oldest and most respected in the country. The Corps assembles one day per week and aims to develop the qualities of self discipline, self reliance, leadership and teamwork which pupils can take with them into whatever walk of life they choose to follow when they leave school. The Cadet Corps offers a wide range of activities which serve to complement the programme offered by our Outdoor Pursuits programme.
Membership of the Cadet Corps is not seen as preparation for a career in the armed forces, although we have an enviable record of entry to the Services, often by means of the highly-competitive Scholarship entry into the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.
Membership of the Corps is compulsory for Year 10 pupils; thereafter it is voluntary and/or by selection and it is invariably over-subscribed each year.
The Corps is yet another aspect of the College's commitment to service of others and we take great pride in the fact that no fewer than 7 of our former pupils have been honoured with the award of the Victoria Cross - the country's highest award for gallantry.
