Brass Ensemble on tour
The Stonyhurst Brass Ensemble went on tour to Cardiff at the beginning of half term, led by their musical director Mr Greg Banks and Stonyhurst’s Director of Music Mr Greg Mann.
The tour began on Saturday 14th February, with a concert given to raise funds for a cancer charity in the Royal Glamorgan Hospital, Llantrisant.
On Sunday, the party had a tour of the Millennium Stadium, attended Mass at Cardiff Cathedral and spent the evening practising their bowling skills!
On Monday 16th February the day began with a tour of the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, followed by a rehearsal there, in preparation for their next concert.
This was a lunchtime concert given in the grandeur of St David’s Hall. The audience for this was particularly young (and excited), as children were arriving at the Hall for a Frozen singalong at 3pm! (Needless to say, the Stonyhurst brass players sang all the songs with great gusto after their performance.)
The tour concluded with a an excellent jazz concert at RWCMD, given by the music students there. This provided lots of inspiration for the Stonyhurst musicians, many of whom play jazz regularly in the Stonyhurst Big Band.
The Brass Ensemble’s programme included arrangements of themes from various films, such as James Bond, Jurassic Park, and Sky Fall. They also played the Battle Hymn of the Republic, La Mer, and Music to watch girls by.
“The tour was a great success and everyone enjoyed it” said Mr Banks. “We had some enthusiastic audiences and our brass players did themselves proud!”
