Confirmation Mass

Twenty-six Stonyhurst pupils were confirmed by The Right Reverend Bishop John Arnold, Bishop of Salford, on Sunday May 8th in St Peter’s Church.

In his homily, Bishop John said that Confirmation marks a beginning in our relationship with God. Quoting from a Meditation written by John Henry Newman, he told the confirmation candidates (who were mostly pupils in Grammar, or year 10) that they are called to some ‘definite purpose’. By listening to God, he said, we can discern what that purpose is, and how we can use our gifts and talents for the benefit of others.

The choir, servers, readers, Eucharistic ministers and sponsors all contributed to what was a very prayerful and uplifting Mass. Concelebrants were Fr John Twist SJ, Fr Joe Waring SJ and Fr Stephen Parkinson. The candidates had been prepared for Confirmation by Stonyhurst’s chaplains, Fr Twist and Sarah Young.

The communion anthem was composed by Dominic Sutton, himself a Confirmation candidate. Everyone was most impressed by his four-part setting of Kyrie, which was beautifully sung by the choir. Dominic is obviously mastering the art of harmony and counterpoint and has a promising future as a composer!
