Learning to Care, Jasper and Arrupé support Derian House

Learning to Care, Stonyhurst’s student fundraising body, has raised £1,181 for Derian House, the children’s hospice near Chorley. The cheque was presented by Harriet Lloyd and Katya Powell (both Poets/in year 12). Harriet and Katya visit Derian House each week, as part of the Arrupé voluntary service programme, with the Lay Chaplain, Miss Sarah Young, and her dog Jasper. Jasper is a ‘Pets as Therapy’ dog. Miss Young said: “ I learnt about Pets as Therapy dogs at a presentation about Derian’s work and wondered if Jasper might be a suitable PAT dog. Jasper is a former Guide Dog and he thought his working days were over! He passed with flying colours and loves going to the hospice. Jasper is soft by nature and yet he seems to find his most doleful face when we go through the doors at Derian. The children love him.”

Katya and Harriet helped to organise the Poetry Learning to Care dinner to raise funds for Derian House; a staff coffee morning raised further funds.
