Learning in the Great Outdoors!

Children at Stonyhurst Mary’s Hall are enjoying an exciting Outdoor Education programme this year. All children in years 3 and 4 have been going to Hothersall Lodge near Preston for an afternoon each week, where they take part in a range of challenging activities. These include rock climbing, cycling, archery, canoeing, kayaking, zip wire and outdoor tree climbing.  After half term, pupils in years 5 and 6 will have the opportunity to take part. Mrs Rachel Murphy, a year 4 class teacher, said: “It is all good fun and a great way for the children to work together and face their fears. Some have even learned to ride bikes for the first time!”

The Outdoor Education programme also includes a Forest School in the grounds of St Mary’s Hall, and a gardening project, in which the children grow flowers and vegetables and keep chickens!

Headmaster Mr Ian Murphy said: “I am a great believer in children making links, and many of the things they learn in the outdoors can be applied to the sciences, history and geography.”
