A talented St Mary’s Hall linguist has won First Prize in a Mandarin Chinese Speech Competition – held at the University of Central Lancashire’s Confucius Institute. Adrienne, a pupil in PP2, recited the Chinese poem ‘Good Manners’, competing against 10 secondary school students; she has been learning Mandarin at school for  about 2 years with Cathy Zheng Hanson.

“We are very proud of Adrienne’s achievement in winning this award,” said Mr Crouch. “A knowledge of Chinese is a distinct advantage in the 21st Century and we are encouraging our youngest children to take the opportunity to have tuition at SMH.”

The Confucius Institute aims to promote the teaching of Chinese language and culture in the UK by working closely with schools and colleges in the region.
