The Salford Diocese Olympic Relay of Prayer comes to St Mary's Hall
Salford Diocese has organised a Relay of Prayer to coincide with the Olympics. Every Catholic school in the Diocese has been given a country to research and pray for, and a local school to visit so that they can tell them everything they have learned about the country.
On the first day of term St Joseph’s Hurst Green had been instructed to carry the prayer torch to St Mary's Hall. They did this in style, leading a pony and bearing gifts. On their arrival Prep and Elements sang “Christ be Our Light” and we all went to the Centenaries Theatre for a presentation. St Joseph’s had been allocated Botswana and they were able to tell us so many things about the country. They brought a flag, spoke some of the language, sang and performed an elaborate dance which some of our children learnt. It was a really lovely occasion and concluded with a prayer and a hymn sung with great gusto by both schools.
The next day it was our turn and we had to go to the College to tell them about….wait for it…. The Comoros Islands.
All readers will know this little set of four islands in the Indian Ocean between Madagascar and Africa. We were able to tell Lower Grammar (Year 9 at Stonyhurst) as much as we could about the islands and even had a chance to watch their famous rapper on Youtube. The torch was then placed in St Peter’s Church in preparation for its next journey across the Ribble Valley to St Augustin's Billington.
