Coast to Coast Cycle Challenge 2014

We were blessed with the most perfect sunny weather for the coast to coast challenge – perhaps even a little too hot at times! After an overnight under canvas at Tanglewood campsite Silloth, and a swim in the Solway Firth, students and staff left on Tuesday morning and cycled 46 miles on day one, following the route of our Roman heritage and Hadrian ’s Wall. Rudiments (year 8) went on an unforgettable trip to Paris in co-curricular week. They cruised on the Seine, visited Versailles, the Louvre, and L'Orangerie. Spectacular views of Paris were seen after climbing up the hill to Sacre Coeur; the children also walked beside the Eiffel Tower and visited Notre Dame. Prize Giving took place on Saturday 28th June and the Guest of Honour was Mr Johnson, Headmaster of Stonyhurst. This was Mr Crouch's last Prize Giving; in his speech he reviewed the year, as well as looking back over his 10 years as SMH's Headmaster. Nine OS returned to Stonyhurst recently to talk to Poets about their chosen careers. A wide range of careers was represented, as well as interesting accounts of the routes taken along the way, such as professional acting via a Physics degree. Poets had the opportunity to attend talks on subjects which included law and politics, medicine, accountancy, languages, computing, business economics, recruitment and aerospace engineering.

Powerful al Fresco Performance by IB Theatre Group

A powerful Drama performance involving audience participation and some very stark choices took place in the Jesuit Gardens this afternoon.   "Garden of Duty" focused on the negative impact of technology on children and was told through an interactive, promenade style of narrative. Grammar Drama students performed under the direction of the Higher Line IB Theatre group and disconcerted the audience participants with some thought-provoking material.

Backstage at the National Theatre

Head of Drama, Miss Laura Dixon arranged an extraordinary visit for Stonyhurst students to see the National Theatre Production of War Horse in Bradford and meet up with one of its stars, Stonyhurst's acclaimed OS, MartinWenner.  After experiencing this powerful and moving performance, the GCSE and A level Drama students had a question and answer session with the cast, followed by a personal tour backstage with Martin, and another cast member, Alex Moran.

England Hockey coach visits Stonyhurst

Stonyhurst hosted a ‘Future Stars’ Hockey Masterclass with Kwan Browne on Saturday 14th June. Kwan has 250 Trinidad caps and has been awarded England Hockey ‘Performance Coach of the year’. He has been working with Sky Sports at the Hockey World Cup as part of the commentary team. Over 30 promising hockey players from Stonyhurst and Springfields Hockey Club took part.
