Prestigious Arkwright Scholarship awarded to Magnus

Magnus Whittle (Syntax/Year 11) has been awarded an Arkwright Scholarship, which will commence in September. He successfully passed the Arkwright Aptitude Paper demonstrating flair and originality in solving engineering design problems and presented GCSE work to a panel of interviewers in March and April at Southampton University, where he also took part in a team exercise; this was designed to give candidates an insight into the challenge and excitement of engineering related careers. Magnus then toured the university and explored the diversity of engineering and the rewards of a career in the sector.
The Arkwright Scholarship will be presented formally at a ceremony hosted by The Institute of Engineering and Technology later in the year, when Scholars will also meet their sponsors.
The Arkwright Trust was founded in 1990 and supports young people during their A Level years by awarding £300 a year to assist with the purchase of materials and books. Scholarships are supported by individuals, companies, institutions and the services. Major sponsors include BAe Systems PLC, British Telecom, Rolls-Royce and the Royal Air Force.
Magnus will carry the status of ‘Arkwright Scholar’ into university, and the College is also to be rewarded: Stonyhurst’s Design and Technology Department will receive £200 per year for the next two years.
