Stonyhurst wins the St Ambrose Tens Tournament

The winning squad with coach, Mr Kaaber, and Headmaster, Mr Johnson

The winning squad with Mr Kaaber, their coach, and the Headmaster, Mr Johnson. Tom Morgan (Captain) holds the trophy.

On Sunday 18th September, the U16 rugby team travelled to Ashton-on-Mersey RFC to compete in the annual St Ambrose College Peter Whiting Memorial Tens Tournament.  A strong field promised a challenging day's rugby.  The pool was successfully negotiated with wins against St Ambrose 'B' and Rydal Penrhos, with the players taking time to get used to the somewhat unusual concept of Tens Rugby.  The quality of play continued to improve in the quarter final as we quickly took an unassailable lead against St Edwards to put us into a semi-final against a strong Wilmslow outfit.  Wilmslow took an early lead but the team maintained composure and good ball retention led to four tries being scored and a hard-fought 22-12 win put us into the final against hosts St Ambrose.

The final was a physical affair but the team exerted excellent pressure defensively, restricting Ambrose's dangerous runners and showing patience with ball in hand. Two tries from captain Tom Morgan and a full length of the pitch effort from Eduardo Lavarini saw us home 19-0.  The team improved with every game and saved the best till last - a good day's rugby for all involved.

Results:

vs St Ambrose B - Won 33-0

vs Rydal - Won 19-7

vs St Edwards - Won 34-19

SF vs Wilmslow - Won 22-12

Final vs St Ambrose A - Won 19-0
