U14 Hockey National Schools Competition

On Tuesday 27th September the U14 hockey team played in the first round of the National Schools Competition. On a very hot and sunny day in Blackpool they faced six other schools knowing that the top two schools would progress to the next round.
Stonyhurst started fantastically against Lytham St Annes High School winning 5 - 0 with captain Harriet Lloyd scoring four goals and Leah Bailey netting the other. Two tough fixtures followed and Stonyhurst were unlucky to lose 1 - 0 to Arnold when a draw or even victory would have been a fair result. Stonyhurst then lost to eventual tournament winners Kirkham Grammar School 3 - 0.
After lunch we faced Baines and Rossall in back to back matches and won both, playing some excellent team hockey in the process. Alex Duckworth's fine individual goal secured a 1 - 0 victory against Baines and Harriet Lloyd, Leah Bailey and Georgina Brown all netted to beat Rossall 3 - 0.
With only one game remaining the team knew that victory against King Edward & Queen Mary would mean they finished in second position and therefore would reach the next round. Unfortunately, it wasn't to be and after a gritty performance the team lost 3 - 0, finishing in 4th position overall.
The girls worked tremendously hard and were exhausted after a long day and over two hours of hockey. They were a credit to the school and should be congratulated on their performance - well done girls!
