The New Ref

Construction has begun on Stonyhurst’s new Dining Refectory, which will be fully operational in January 2013. The new building will provide a significant upgrade for Stonyhurst’s catering and dining, and will meet the 21st century needs of the College.

The new refectory has been designed by Preston architects Cassidy and Ashton and will overlook the recently completed Weld House sixth form accommodation which they also designed. Throughout, consultation has taken place with English Heritage, who describe the design as “quietly modern - standing as an obvious addition to the complex without competing with the more historic elements.”

The building will have a total floor area of 1425m2 and will create the following accommodation:

·         A new Dining Area capable of seating 320 people at any one time

·         New state-of-the-art kitchen facilities with the necessary storage and support areas.

·         Changing facilities for staff.

·         Toilet accommodation for pupils.

·         A multi-purpose space for teaching, dining, games’ teas, etc

The building design is contemporary in nature, but softened by the use of traditional materials. It comprises mainly sandstone to match that of the College buildings around it, whist modern zinc and aluminium panels will resonate with the slate used elsewhere. Landscaping around the building will also make external dining possible, with westerly views looking over the ponds and western approach to Stonyhurst College. This will open up beautiful views for pupils, staff, and members of the public when functions are taking place.
