17 students from Lower Grammar and Grammar and 4 members of staff completed the England Hockey Level One umpiring course held at The Tithe Barn, Browsholme Hall.

Umpiring hockey is a challenging and rewarding experience. To do it well, you need to be fit, you need to be a good ‘people manager’ and you need to be fair and honest. In addition it is important that you have good communication skills, understand the game technically and tactically and, last but not least, you need to know the rules of the game.

All 21 people who attended the course passed the theory test and will now start to develop their umpiring skills by umpiring school and league matches. To become accredited they will have to umpire three competitive matches before they then complete an assessment.

Well done to all involved and a special thank you to Amanda Parker who ran the course.
