Alex wins Rotary Young Writers Competition

Alex Hughes (Figures/Year 7) has won First Prize in the Rotary Young Writers competition. Alex was invited to imagine what he would say as an old man to his own son; he wrote his thoughts in a letter, in which he thanked his son for making his life complete, explained some of the difficult decisions he’d had to make as a father, and told his son he was very proud of him. The Chairman of the local Rotary Club, John Sharp, the competition’s organiser, Sue Hind, and Vivien Meath, a former editor of the Clitheroe Advertiser, came to an assembly this term to present Alex with an inscribed crystal trophy. They also talked to the school about Rotary’s national and international work.
Not only did Alex’s letter win at local level, it also came second at District level, out of all the entries from Lancashire & Cumbria.
“It is the emotional maturity of Alex's letter which struck me,” said Mrs Catherine Robinson, Head of English. “I am delighted at his well deserved success.”
