Girls Lower Line
The Lower Line girls’ house encompasses Lower Grammar (year 9), Grammar (year 10) and Syntax (year 11) girls. The environment within the house promotes a sense of community, mutual respect and personal responsibility.
Lower Grammar and Grammar girl boarders share bedrooms with between two and four other girls. They have individual study desks in their own designated study centre. They also share excellent bathroom facilities. Day pupils in Lower Grammar and Grammar have their own study facilities in a study centre on the ground floor.
Syntax boarders share rooms with typically one other student. As the eldest members of the house, Syntax girls have their own bathroom facilities.
The girls have a resident housemistress and an additional residential staff member, ensuring that there is always someone on hand. There are also four other duty staff who help in the house, who occupy various other roles in the school. The girls therefore have a range of people to go to if they need help, assistance or guidance in any way. The housemistress has an 'open door' policy so the girls can approach her with any issue, whether it is an academic concern or a pastoral problem.
The girls are given duties and distinct responsibilities for the day to day running of the house. These are allocated by year and organised by a rota. Lower Grammar girls are responsible for tidying the communal areas. Grammarians are charged with collecting fruit for the girls (available at break times) as well as any post or packages for any of the Lower Line girls. Syntax girls are responsible for waking everyone in the mornings. Duties help reinforce a sense of responsibility and accountability.
Spirituality is an important part of life at Stonyhurst and this is reflected within the Lower Line girls’ house. Night prayers are held twice a week.
The intention of the house team is to help each girl feel like a valued individual living in a wider community. We provide a calm working atmosphere for all girls, complimented by a relaxed domestic setting for our boarders.
