Giving to Stonyhurst

Stonyhurst is deeply conscious of the debt it owes to all who have given their support to Stonyhurst over the years.  We hope many more will feel able to contribute to our future success.  Every gift we receive makes a difference.  If you would like to find out more about the difference your donation could make, click here to see a list of current projects.

There are several methods by which you can make a gift to Stonyhurst as shown below. Alternatively, for more information please contact us directly; we would be delighted to hear from you.

By giving regularly, whether monthly or annually, your regular contribution makes a significant difference to Stonyhurst. Gift form

You may donate by cheque, electronic transfer, cash or credit card. Gift form

If you are a UK taxpayer Stonyhurst could claim an additional 25p for every £1 you donate at no additional cost to yourself.  In order for your gift to qualify for Gift Aid you will need to be a UK tax payer and pay at least a sum of UK income or capital gains tax equal to that which we will claim back on your donation. Gift Aid form

If you are a higher rate taxpayer, either at 40% or 50%, you can also claim the difference between the basic rate of tax that Stonyhurst reclaims and the highest rate of tax you pay on your Self Assessment form.

Gifts of capital assets other than shares can be made directly to Stonyhurst without incurring any liability to Capital Gains Tax or Inheritance Tax. These gifts might include personal possessions such as property, books or works of art.

If you have your own company you may find this method of giving a particularly attractive and cost-effective way of supporting Stonyhurst. When a company gives to a charity, the value of the gift can be offset against the company's highest rate of Corporation Tax.

Companies pay their donations GROSS and will not have to make any Gift Aid declaration. Your company simply makes whatever donation you want and then tax relief is claimed against the value of the gift when calculating profits for Corporation Tax. Company gifts can be made on a regular or one-off basis.

If you are a non-UK resident you can make a gift by bank transfer or credit card payment; to do this please contact the Development Office.

The rules governing gifts from overseas residents have now been relaxed, so gifts can be made in a tax-efficient way. As an overseas resident you will qualify for tax relief provided you have income or capital gains charged to the UK tax authorities that are at least equal to the gross amount of donation.

If you are a US resident your gift to Stonyhurst can be tax deductible if made through the medium of the British Schools and Universities Foundation. The BSUF is a 501(3)(c) Charity approved by the US Internal Revenue Service, set up over 40 years ago to support British schools and universities in a tax efficient way.

We are fortunate to have John Stiller (OS, Director of BSUF) as our American contact. If you would like to make a donation by check please make the check payable to the BSUF, expressing a preference for Stonyhurst. USA Gift Form.

If you live in the US and would like more information, please contact the Development Office or John Stiller

Throughout its history Stonyhurst has been fortunate to benefit from bequests from parents, friends and former pupils. Leaving a Legacy is an act of generosity that will live on after you and help secure our future.  A gift in your Will is one of the most tax-effective ways of supporting Stonyhurst. Whether a specified sum of money, a particular asset, or a proportion of the remainder of your estate, your gift will be free of UK Inheritance Tax.  If you pledge to remember Stonyhurst in your Will you will become a member of the Thomas Weld Society.

If you are thinking about including a gift in your Will, or would like further information please take a look at our 'A Lasting Legacy' brochure.
