U16s win Rugby 7s Tournament at St Marys' Crosby
The U16s opened their Sevens season by securing the inaugural St Mary's, Crosby U16 tournament yesterday. On a hot day in blazing sunshine, pool games saw good wins against Ormskirk and Cowley with numerous players making it onto the score sheet with Casanueva, Morgan and Oduoza to the fore. As players started to tire in the conditions, St Edwards pounced upon early lethargy in the final pool game and raced into a 12-0 lead. This served as a wake-up call and three tries from Casanueva and single scores from Carroll, Fitzgerald, Melchiorre and Morgan saw Stonyhurst into the final with a 45-19 win.

A hugely enjoyable day's cricket, with two top quality games in which the Stonyhurst U15s came up just short in both games. After a disastrous start against Audenshaw, losing two early wickets, Fitzgerald and Kilby got into a rhythm and built a defendable score, Kilby being bowled agonisingly short of his 50. The bowling attack struggled to find any meaningful penetration until Alex Johnson finally made a breakthrough and took 2 wickets, but this was not enough as Audenshaw's quality in their batting saw them through to the final with 2 overs to spare.
And so to a 3rd/4th place play-off against Arnold, who had come up short against Rainhill. Stonyhurst's fielding lacked its customary energy and accuracy, with numerous chances being spurned as Arnold posted a formidable 174. Undeterred, Stonyhurst kept up with the daunting run rate required and Butterwick's excellent 56, ably supported by Morgan, Fitzgerald and Kilby, brought the chase tantalising close. Ultimately, we weren't quite able to make up the necessary runs and fell 11 short. Nonetheless, this was an excellent day of cricket for a team who have enjoyed a great season, beaten only once until today, who have participated with genuine enthusiasm and energy throughout.
