Chemistry at Stonyhurst
The Chemistry course covers the study of Organic, Inorganic and Physical Chemistry. At GCSE practical work dominates the course and develops the ability to acquire knowledge, especially the fostering of imaginative and critical thinking.
Syllabuses
Lower Grammar (Year 9)
The programme of Study sets out to follow the National Curriculum Key Stage 3 and start some basic topics from the GCSE course.
GCSE Course (Year 10 & 11)
The Specification followed at GCSE is AQA Chemistry 4421.
The course covers the three traditional branches of Chemistry: Organic, Inorganic and Physical Chemistry. It is intended to be a broad overview of the subject and so includes aspects of geology as well as atomic structure, the Periodic Table, energy, reaction rates, acids and bases, organic chemistry, industrial processes, oil and the atmosphere.
AS / A2 Course (Year 12 & 13)
The Specification followed at A Level is OCR Specification A.
Many of the topics introduced in the GCSE course reappear in an expanded form together with a much larger Organic section and a systematic study of the properties of elements and their compounds according to their periodic classification.
AS: Unit 1 Foundation Chemistry, Unit 2 Chains and Rings, Unit 3 How Far, How Fast? Practical Assessments.
A2: Unit 4 Chains, Rings and Spectroscopy, Unit 5 Trends and Patterns, Unit 6 Unifying Concepts in Chemistry Practical Assessments.
