Tutor System

Each pupil is assigned a personal tutor when they come to Stonyhurst College. The role of the tutor is to help and guide the pupils in their academic work and to encourage their involvement in the wider life of the College. Each tutor has about 8 tutees from the same year group or Playroom.
Tutors are divided into Higher Line or Lower Line depending on their area of expertise. Pupils have the same tutor throughout Lower Line and will be assigned a different tutor in Higher Line. Lower Line tutors are instrumental in helping pupils to settle into the academic and extra curricular life of the College life, and to assist them with GCSE choices. Higher Line tutors play a crucial role in guiding their tutees in their choice of university course and the subsequent application process.
The role of the tutor has several different functions. Tutors support pupils in their academic work, challenging them to do their best, and to provide a further strand of pastoral care. Tutors congratulate pupils when they do well, but are also part of the disciplinary process. Parents are welcome to contact their child’s tutor if they have any concerns about their son or daughter’s progress.
