Parents’ events

Food and wine tasting event

Stonyhurst parents enjoyed a food and wine tasting event on Thursday 26th February at the Derby Arms, Longridge. Our guest for the evening was OS Tom Lorimer (77-86) who works for the independent wine merchants Lea & Sandeman. Tom provided some delicious wines for the evening along with a breadth of knowledge about each. Tom also spoke about his days at Stonyhurst with great affection and told some very entertaining stories. It was a wonderful evening, hosted by Andrew McLean (current parent) from the Seafood Pub Company, and our thanks go to him, Joycelyn Neve and her team for their hard work and great food! The evening ended with a small raffle which raised £270 towards the Stonyhurst Annual Fund.

Curator’s talk: paintings

On the 5th February the third in our series of curator evenings took place, entitled ‘Dirty Pictures’.  Jan Graffius gave an informative talk and presentation about the restoration of Stonyhurst’s art.  It was fascinating to hear about the different methods of conservation and restoration for individual paintings and to see these changes made to the paintings under a UV lamp.  Jan talked about the various things which threaten to undermine the condition of paintings, such as temperature, lighting and insects.

The money raised from tickets sales for these events will help to support the restoration of one of the Shireburn portraits in our Collections.
