Pitch Perfect Performance by U14 Hockey Team

On 4th October, Stonyhurst’s U14 girls Hockey team played in the County round of the National Schools Tournament at Stanley Park in Blackpool.  The first of the five matches of the day was against Rossall.  Stonyhurst got off to a flying start with a hat-trick from Alice Charles.  The girls stayed strong and managed to get three more goals in by full time to make the final score 6-0.  With back-to-back matches Stonyhurst’s next match against Arnold KEQMS (AKS) was bound to be one of the most difficult; both teams had lots of chances on goal but the score remained 0-0 at half-time.  However, Stonyhurst went out into the second half determined. Sticking to their game plan from Mrs Luker, Alice Charles managed to slip two goals past the AKS County keeper, finishing the game 2-0.

Our winning streak continued against Baines, with an incredible 8 goals scored in total, by Alice, Eleanor, Nicole, and Amy and some spectacular defending.  The penultimate match against Lytham St Anne’s finished 6-0.  By amazing play from the defence and goalkeeper Olivia, once again, no goals were conceded.  With one match to go this meant that Stonyhurst had qualified for the Regional round of the tournament but the girls were aiming for the title of County Championships.  Due to the excellent results from Stonyhurst so far, a draw or a win against Kirkham would crown Stonyhurst the County champions.  Kirkham got off to a strong start in the first half causing Stonyhurst to mark in tight defence and fight away multiple short corners.  Nevertheless, Stonyhurst remained resolute and managed to keep the score line 0-0, resulting in them going through to the next round as U14 County Champions!

This winning performance was a result of some solid teamwork demonstrating that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.  We wish the U16 Hockey team the best of luck when they play in the Nationals next week!
