SMH Hockey teams compete in AKS tournament

The U13 A&B team hockey players travelled to AKS Lytham for an afternoon of competitive hockey this week. Both teams took part in a round robin tournament, playing against 5 other schools.

U13A

The girls held on to a 0-0 draw against Rossall school.  Against Lytham, they began to find form, passing the ball around with confidence and setting up a number of chances before eventually going 1-0 ahead.  There were some excellent individual performances against Kirkham and some tenacious defending throughout.  On the bell the score was 0-0, Kirkham still with a penalty corner to play.  Unfortunately the girls could not hold on to the draw and Kirkham found the bottom corner of the goal in the final seconds of the match.  The U13As picked up 3 points against Greenbank school, which left the final game as a decider for 2nd and 3rd place. SMH needed to win to finish in 2nd place in the tournament and AKS needed a draw.  The game saw some excellent attacking play from both sides, with both goal keepers having to make saves.  SMH won a number of short corners but were unable to convert.  The final whistle went with a 0-0 draw. The final results were as follows:

1st – Kirkham

2nd – AKS

3rd – SMH

4th – Rossall

5th – Lytham

6th – Greenbank

U13B

The U13Bs began well, picking up 6 points with a 2-0 win over AKS, and a 3-0 win over Lytham.  The girls faced Kirkham in the next match; some competitive hockey was played and SMH displayed excellent team work throughout, making good decisions in both attacking and defensive play.  The match finished 1-0 to Kirkham.  The girls got back to form in the next game against Greenbank, winning 4-0.  Goals were scored by Catherine K, Grace B and Amy W.  Confidence was high going into the last game, winning 2-0 against AKS and finishing 2nd overall in the B team tournament.
