A trip to Jaguar Land Rover

Business Studies’ students in Poetry visited Jaguar Land Rover in Birmingham on Tuesday 10th June. They had a tour of the factory to observe JLR’s approach to lean production (ways of minimising resources and waste in the production process), which was followed by a talk on JLR Objectives and Strategy.

Jean-Luc Mouttet said: “The trip gave me a great insight into the car industry, and how JLR are responding to the opportunities of emerging markets, especially the huge opportunity that is China – their biggest target market.” Dominic Dempsey found it very interesting “to see business in action and the role that technology plays in industry today”.

Earlier in the term, the director of Graham and Brown, a family-owned wallcoverings group based in Blackburn – visited Stonyhurst.

Ian Brown (named the Institute of Directors’ 2012 North West Director of the Year) spoke to Rhetoric Business Studies students about doing business in China and how Graham and Brown have taken up opportunities there.

Ollie Dent attended the talk, and said: “ Mr Brown gave a fascinating insight into the opportunities, threats, risks and rewards, of a business wanting to enter into the Chinese market in today’s rapidly changing environment. We gained first-hand knowledge of the obstacles a business has to overcome when wanting to tackle the vast economy, and the benefits which follow. Rhetoric business students have benefited massively from Mr Brown’s talk as we prepare for our Unit 4 exam, which is highly focused on the Chinese business market.”
