Trip to Zimbabwe

Students in Rhetoric (year 13) recently returned from an inspirational trip to Zimbabwe, where they visited our Jesuit sister school, St Peter’s, Kubatana.

Stonyhurst has a long-standing partnership with St Peter’s, called Chirwirangwe – shona for ‘Fighting together’.
Having been apprehensive about the oppressive political regime and cultural differences for which Zimbabwe has become renowned, Tom Bannigan, Daisy Chitnis and Georgia Heathcote were given a warm welcome everywhere they went. They were accompanied by Miss Julie Greenwood and Miss Karen Mitchell.
Their 10-day trip included visits to the worldwide organisation L’Arche, which in Zimbabwe cares for abandoned and orphaned children who have learning difficulties. They also went on safari and visited another Jesuit school, St George’s College.
Since returning to the UK Tom, Daisy and Georgia have been keeping in touch with their counterparts in Zimbabwe via email and Skype. Having been corresponding regularly for a while before the trip, they all agree that it’s great to be able to put a face to a name.
