Academic Excellence

Stonyhurst has a strong reputation for educational excellence rooted in the Jesuit belief that excellence in education and learning is Ad Maiorem Dei Gloriam, for the greater glory of God.

Our academic staff are talented, knowledgeable and passionate about their subject areas – each and every one of our teachers has been hand-picked not only because of their ability to teach, but because of their ability to inspire.

Educational excellence at Stonyhurst extends far beyond academic subjects and classrooms. Cura personalis, care for the whole person, is at the heart of Jesuit schools, therefore co-curricular activities and formation of character also form part of a Stonyhurst education.

New pupils respond enthusiastically to our pupil-centred teaching which, from foundation stage to Sixth Form, stimulates intellectual curiosity and fosters a lifelong passion for learning.

In 2024, we were delighted that our A level exam results placed us in the top 25% of schools and colleges for value-added progress.

Value-added in education is the difference between the expected grade from a pupil's baseline assessment score at the beginning of their course and the grade they actually achieved. It is a measure of the progress pupils make over a period of time. Value-added takes into account how much progress a child has made since their starting point, compared to the progress they have made relative to similar pupils. It is designed to be a fair tool that focuses on measuring progress based on the individual.

We are delighted to announce that Stonyhurst has been recognised as one of the Top 30 schools nationally offering the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP)

This recognition follows a summer where we celebrated a record number of pupils achieving the IB Diploma, a testament to their hard work and the exceptional support of our dedicated staff.

The IB Diploma challenges pupil to develop not only academically but to become well-rounded individuals, embodying the principles of our Jesuit Ethos where we encourage our pupils to strive for academic success while growing into men and women for others.

Global destinations for pupils who have completed the programme includes: University of St Andrews; University of Exeter; Hamilton College New York; University of Notre Dame US; King’s College London; IE Madrid, University of Sydney; University of St Gallen Switzerland; Luiss Italy and Carnegie Mellon US.
