Sport is a vital part of our identity and life at Stonyhurst and offers students the opportunity to develop self-confidence, discipline and a positive work ethic.
All students take part in Games throughout their Stonyhurst career, everyone enjoys PE until Grammar when PE becomes a GCSE option, and sport is a key feature of our co-curricular personal development programme.
Boys and girls teams represent Stonyhurst in local and national fixtures, as well as on international tours every year. Competitive sport is most certainly at the heart of our programme and we enjoy an enviable record of achievement, but place equal importance on enjoyment and sportsmanship.
This enriching sporting experience compliments our holistic approach to education and we believe that what happens on the sports field, in terms of attitude, behaviour and motivation, can have a positive impact on success in the classroom.
Stonyhurst offers a wide range of team games from the traditional: rugby, hockey, cricket, netball, athletics, football, basketball, cross-country, badminton and tennis, to fencing, water polo, ju-jitsu, shooting, horse riding and scuba diving.
The study of, and participation in, PE enables pupils to gain greater understanding of a variety of sporting principles and concepts as well as to develop their practical ability. Students with a particular interest can opt for PE GCSE and A Level.
The Stonyhurst campus extends over 2,500 acres and boasts magnificent sports facilities including our extensive playing fields, a water based Astroturf pitch, tennis and netball courts, a swimming pool, a sports hall and a 9 hole golf course.
