International Baccalaureate Programmes

As a British Jesuit school with a significant international dimension, our mission is to prepare young people intellectually, spiritually and emotionally to offer principled leadership in today’s world.

Founded in 1968, the International Baccalaureate® (IB) is a non-profit educational foundation which aims to develop the intellectual, personal, emotional and social skills needed to live, learn and work in a rapidly globalizing world.

The mission of the International Baccalaureate organisation has great affinity, therefore, with Stonyhurst College. We were authorised as an IB World School in 2012, and have been running the IB Diploma programme since 2013.

Our IB Diploma students have consistently performed above the world average, and IB Diploma students now make up just under one third of the year group. Past Diploma students have gone on to study at a range of prestigious UK universities, including Russell Group, such as Durham, University College, London and Bristol, as well as many well-regarding institutions across Europe, the US and Canada. Subjects studied, reflecting the broad nature of an IB curriculum, have varied from Medicine, Law and Engineering, to Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE), Psychology and Creative and Film studies.

We are now delighted to have been accepted as a candidate school* for the IB’s newest programme, the IB Careers Related Programme, or IBCP.

This programme, which we intend to run from September 2018, means that young people have three alternative pathways for Higher Line (Sixth Form) study, dependent on their individual skills, talents and aspirations.

*only schools authorised by the International Baccalaureate can offer any of its four academic programmes: the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP), the Diploma Programme, or the Careers Related Programme. Candidate status gives no guarantee that authorisation will be granted. For further information about the IB and its programmes, please visit
