Performance in the International Baccalaureate is marked against set standards for each subject on a scale of 1 (lowest) to 7 (highest), with up to 3 additional points awarded for the Theory of Knowledge essay and the Extended Essay combined.

IB examinations are mainly at the end of the programme, with internal assessment tasks – projects, portfolios, reports, class presentations, practical laboratory work, and mathematical investigations – being completed at various points in the two-year course.

At the end of the course, students who have gained 24 or more points, from the maximum of 45, are awarded the IB Diploma, subject to certain conditions, and universities make conditional offers based on achieving a specified number of IB points.
