Rebecca OS 10

About Rebecca

After studying Mathematics, Physics, Design & Technology, and Further Maths for A-Levels, Rebecca attended Durham University to study Mechanical Engineering. Graduating with a masters she joined a government defence organisation graduate scheme in 2014, which included a secondment to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London. In June 2018 she became a chartered engineer with the Institute of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE). Her current work includes the development, design, manufacture and testing of thermal, drop and ballistic systems, for which she is considered a technical authority.

During her time at Stonyhurst Rebecca was involved with the CCF, Outdoor Pursuits and the Robotics club. These activities helped to shape her as a person and instilled a love of the outdoors and rock climbing which lasts to this day. Having strong female teachers as role models, several supportive staff encouraged her to enjoy mathematics and physics, and directed her to towards becoming an engineer.

As part of her volunteering work Rebecca became a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) ambassador and conducted masterclasses in Engineering and Mathematics for the Royal Institute to encourage other students to consider STEM careers. She is also a mentor to both local school pupils applying to university, and graduates working towards engineering chartership. In order to further introduce engineering to a wider audience, she appeared in the TV show “Escape” broadcast on Channel 4 in 2017, with former Special Forces Ant Middleton and 4 fellow engineers.

In the future Rebecca hopes to stay within the defence industry and work towards becoming a distinguished engineer.
