The earliest reference to the Stonyhurst Wanderers appears to be in 1883 when a Cricket XI toured Lancashire and played the College on the 30^th July. A Wanderers team played annually henceforth for several years and a photograph exists of the Wanderers Cricket XI of 1885 which includes Arthur Conan Doyle. The cricket and rugby teams flourished in the late twenties and early thirties and were then revived post-war and continues today.

Today, Wanderers sport continues with a very strong golfing society who regularly meet for games around the country, in addition to competing in prestigious national competitions such as the Halford Hewitt.  Croquet, cricket and football matches are held at Stonyhurst annually where OS compete against College pupils.  OS cross-country teams compete at organised races in London and Sedbergh, and rugby and hockey teams compete for the Dermot Gogarty Cup.
