Candlemas at Stonyhurst

This week began with school Mass in St Peter’s Church, on the Feast of Candlemas. The chief celebrant was The British Jesuit Provincial, Fr Dermot Preston, SJ, who is currently visiting Stonyhurst.

The Mass began in darkness, before the church was illuminated by Rhetoric’s candlelit procession, as the school sang Of the Father’s Heart Begotten. Schola Cantorum sang Byrd’s Four Part Mass, (with verse solos sung by Genevieve and Alethea Turner, Robert Simpson and Noah Williams), Eccard’s When to the temple Mary went and Lord, let me know mine end by Greene (soloists: Genevieve Turner and Oliva Haworth), directed by Dr Kevin Morgan.

In his homily, Fr Dermot encouraged everyone to be a light in the darkness: our everyday acts of kindness, generosity, friendship and love, he said, can make a difference in a broken world, and can have more of an influence than we can ever know.

Schola Cantorum will give a concert of French music on Friday March 6th in St Peter’s Church at 7.30pm. The programme will include Fauré’s RequiemCantique de Jean Racine and French organ music.
