Co-curricular Programme

An essential ingredient

Co-curricular activities are an essential ingredient in a full and broad education, enabling pupils to discover and develop their talents, as well as reinforcing a sense of belonging to the Stonyhurst community. With over 100 activities on offer each week, Stonyhurst pupils are encouraged to throw themselves into our vast co-curricular programme and to participate fully. Music, drama, robotics, debating, social enterprise, visual arts, debating and sport reflect the breadth of possibilities open to them. As well as this, an extensive array of activities such Model United Nations, CCF, scuba diving and the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme help our pupils to become well-rounded, ambitious and adventurous individuals. College Societies host distinguished guest speakers, and the College historical collections of paintings, manuscripts and a great variety of artefacts are another unique source of enrichment in our pupils’ education.

Co-curricular involvement is monitored by each pupil’s tutor to ensure that they are following a well-rounded programme of activities suited to their interests and talents. Pupils should, as a general rule of thumb, aim to take at least three co-curricular options each term.

Clubs include politics, philosophy, robotics, astronomy, economics. Impressive range of speakers, recently Professor Robert Winston, historian Lord Hennessy, plus academics and politicians (we imagine Jacob Rees Mogg was thought-provoking at the very least). CCF compulsory for the first two years and most continue thereafter. DofE strong.

The Good Schools Guide

Developing the whole person

We believe in ‘cura personalis’ – development of the whole person. While academic performance is important, learning and personal growth extends far beyond the classroom at Stonyhurst. We challenge our pupils to excel in their co-curricular activities and to dare to be the best that they can be in all that they do. We believe that co-curricular activities are essential in developing the whole person. With this in mind, we offer a large and diverse range of co-curricular activities so that there are activities which will inspire and challenge every pupil.

What is on offer?

Opportunities for responsibility and leadership

There are many opportunities for Higher Line (Sixth Form) pupils to take on responsibility for various different events and activities, from taking leadership roles in the Line competitions and CCF to being part of the Poetry Banquet committee which puts the responsibility of organising a charity banquet firmly in the hands of the Poets (Year 12), from planning stage to implementation. The banquet raises funds for the Stonyhurst Children’s Holiday Week, which allows Poets and Rhetoricians the opportunity to look after disabled children for a week whilst allowing their parents some respite, is an incredible opportunity for the pupils to challenge themselves whilst at the same time to develop and grow as individuals.

The curriculum is enriched by an outstanding range of extra-curricular activities. The variety, quality and amount of sporting, musical and drama provision is exceptional.
