Scholarships

Art scholarships are awarded on the strength of a portfolio of work. The work should demonstrate a high degree of skill, especially with regard to drawing, as well as reflecting a lively personal interest in the subject.

Lower Line Art scholars will study Art to (I) GCSE; Higher Line Art Scholars will study Art to A Level. All Art scholars will be expected to demonstrate respectful and inquisitive engagement in the Scholars Programme, which will include attendance of dedicated clinic/activity sessions; access to artworks of the Stonyhurst Collections; Visiting Artist workshop days and subsequent exhibition of work produced; annual trips to galleries, sculpture parks or other venues as directed by the Head of Art.

Academic scholars are expected to demonstrate full participation in the intellectual and cultural life of the College, primarily as directed and overseen by their Scholars’ Tutor and the Master of Scholars: this will include entry into internal and external competitions; engagement with the Scholars Programme, including enrichment talks, trips, celebrations and other occasions; dedication to reading expectations tailored to individual scholars; achievement of academic standards in line with targets set. In Higher Line, academic scholars may be expected to take mentoring or other leadership roles, to support scholars’ events, and to show enthusiastic and timely participation in UCAS/next steps programmes, including the Oxbridge Programme where applicable

Music scholars will have their expectations and Scholars Programme determined and reviewed by the Director of Music. All music scholars will be expected to attend talks and performances arranged for them, and to attend an annual trip to a concert, opera or other occasion as directed by the Director of Music, including where appropriate the annual Farm Street Christmas Concert in London. Music scholars will commit to the development of their personal musicianship by adhering to expectations regarding music lessons and practice, as well as membership of the appropriate choirs/groups/ensembles,and performances in concerts and other occasions such as Playroom events and Parents’ Weekends. They will be entered into appropriate competitions and generally seek to contribute to the musical and cultural life of the College. In Higher Line, Music scholars may be expected to take up mentoring or other leadership/support roles, as directed by the Director of Music.

Sports scholars will model sporting values of teamwork, fair play, respect, excellence, positivity, humility and commitment. They will demonstrate selfless dedication to team performances in sports fixtures. They will work with the Sports Scholars’ Mentor on individualised programmes for their development, including, where appropriate, strength and conditioning elements. In Higher Line, Sports scholars will be willing to take on mentoring or other leadership roles when sought.

Lower Line Drama scholars will study Drama to (I)GCSE; Higher Line Drama scholars will be encouraged to study Drama to A Level. All Drama scholars will be expected to seek participation in College drama, including theatrical productions, screenings, trips; and, in Higher Line, leadership/directorial/mentoring roles

Candidates for the All-Rounder awards will need to show evidence of very sound all-round skills across the curriculum. A candidate must have particular gifts in some aspect of co-curricular life and an area of genuine strength in art, drama, music or sport, and be likely to make a significant contribution to the overall life of St Mary’s Hall, and thence on to Stonyhurst College. Awards will be based on interviews and sometimes examinations, practical assessments or a portfolio as specified by the Headmaster.

St Francis Xavier was a pioneer who believed in his cause and never gave up. He spent much of his life pushing the boundaries and challenging himself to achieve more and more. We believe that a Stonyhurst education can give young people a chance to emulate St Francis and become tenacious pioneers for the modern world. This award can give that opportunity to Stonyhurst pupils.
