Mr John Browne, Headmaster of Stonyhurst, himself benefitted from a Jesuit education. Formerly the Headmaster of St Aloysius’ College in Glasgow, Deputy Headmaster at Ampleforth College in North Yorkshire and Headmaster of Westminster Cathedral Choir School, Mr Browne has a postgraduate LLB from City University, London and a Masters in Business Administration. His BA was in Music from the University of Bristol and his career in independent day and boarding schools has included Director of Music and Assistant Director of Music posts. He is married to Marie, and they have a son, William.
Mr Browne describes his educational philosophy as follows:
“We really need to get to know our pupils as well as possible, to know what ‘makes them tick’, to know their capabilities, and to challenge them to achieve their personal best academically and in many other areas of school life. Academic performance and exam results are really important but also, especially in a boarding school, how an individual grows and develops as a character spiritually and emotionally is just as important.
At Stonyhurst, we believe we can give our pupils that extra edge which will allow them to go further in life. Above all, we do not just want to form young people who will take what they can. Rather, we want the OS (Stonyhurst alumni) who leave us to be prepared to ask what they can give to others.”
