The Stonyhurst International Language School offers a structured and immersive English language education for international pupils aged 11 to 17. With a focus on academic excellence, cultural enrichment, and full integration into College life, our programme is designed to develop English proficiency while maintaining essential skills in other subjects.
Our Cohorts
Pupils are grouped into three cohorts based on age:
- Lower School (Ages 11-13)
- Middle School (Ages 13-15)
- Upper School (Ages 15-17)
Comprehensive Academic Support
Expert-Led English Lessons & Thematic Learning
Pupils receive 20 English lessons per week, taught by qualified EAL (English as an Additional Language) specialist teachers. Our thematic approach integrates the rich literary heritage of Stonyhurst and provides access to historical artefacts from the renowned Stonyhurst Collections, enhancing language learning through cultural exploration.
Mathematics for Continued Global Education
To ensure pupils maintain their numeracy skills, our programme includes two mathematics lessons per week. This helps pupils remain academically prepared for their return to their home country’s education system.
Project-Based Learning & Public Speaking
Each pupil completes a personalized English-language project, focusing on Stonyhurst’s history, culture, or local heritage. This research project culminates in a presentation to teachers and peers, enhancing critical thinking, written communication, and public speaking skills.
Jesuit Values & Theology Education
As the oldest Jesuit school in the world, Stonyhurst offers a Theology course as part of the Language School curriculum. Pupils gain insight into Jesuit traditions and values, which shape our holistic approach to education.

Full Integration into College Life
Tutor Groups & Personal Development
Language School pupils are fully integrated into tutor groups alongside peers from Stonyhurst’s other academic programmes. This fosters a sense of belonging and academic collaboration, while also allowing them to participate in the Personal, Social, Health, and Careers (PSHE) education programme.
Sports, Games & After-School Activities
Pupils engage in the College Games and activities programme at least three times per week, playing sports and socializing with pupils from other Stonyhurst programmes. They also enjoy access to a full range of after-school clubs and extracurricular activities, ensuring a well-rounded and engaging experience.
Official Recognition & Achievement
At the end of the Language School programme, pupils receive a Certificate of Achievement, which formally acknowledges:
- Their English language proficiency and progress.
- Their active participation in academic, pastoral, spiritual, and co-curricular activities at Stonyhurst College.
This certificate serves as a valuable credential for pupils looking to further their education at international institutions.
