It was an exciting day for Stonyhurst, as Carrie Grant and the BBC One Show team came to film a unique recording of Stonyhurst Choir, conducted by our very own Mr Greg Mann, performing the oldest known version of “Adeste Fideles” (O come all ye faithful).  The original manuscript, held in trust by Stonyhurst College, dates from 1751 and was penned by John Francis Wade, a Latin teacher and choirmaster at the English College, Douai in northern France.  Wade supplemented his teaching income by copying church music, producing a book of Mass settings and other sacred songs “Cantus Diversi”.  At the end of his book, Wade added a composition of his own, “Adeste Fideles” (O come all ye faithful).  This is the oldest known version of the hymn.  Jan Graffius, our curator, was also interviewed, sharing her expert knowledge of the original manuscript and the Stonyhurst Collection.  The performance will be broadcast nationally on The One Show on December 18th.
