Carbon Literacy | IB

Rhetoric IB pupils attended a presentation given by Ben Scott from the Environment Agency raising awareness of carbon literacy. Pupils had to use a carbon calculator to calculate their own personal carbon usage against the average annual usage of 11 tonnes per person.
Ben spoke to the group about the climate crisis and the urgency for action, explaining to the group how even more 'green' options, such as sending emails, can incur a carbon cost of 4g of carbon per email. He talked about the action being taken to address the climate crisis by the UK Government and the Environment Agency after the government announced a climate emergency in 2019. Pupils were left in no doubt of the seriousness of the current situation by the sharing of Greta Thunberg's star warning  - " I don't want you to be hopeful. I want you to panic. I want you to feel the fear I feel every day. And then I want you to act. I want you to act as you would in a crisis. I want you to act as if the house was on fire—because it is".
