Stonyhurst College is proud to announce the launch of its International Language School, an innovative programme designed to equip international pupils with the English language skills and academic foundation needed for success. Launching in September 2025, the programme will offer an immersive experience within the rich educational and pastoral environment of the World’s oldest Jesuit school.
The International Language School is tailored for pupils aged 11 to 17, providing an intensive English as an Additional Language (EAL) curriculum, with up to 20 EAL lessons per week alongside an appropriate level of mathematics to ensure academic continuity. Pupils are placed in three cohorts – Lower School (ages 11-13), Middle School (ages 13-15), and Upper School (ages 15-17) – ensuring a structured and supportive learning pathway. The programme is specifically designed to prepare pupils for seamless integration into Stonyhurst’s mainstream curriculum and beyond.
“As families across the world seek a British boarding education that prioritises both academic excellence and personal development, Stonyhurst has designed the International Language School to meet these evolving needs,” said John Browne, Headmaster at Stonyhurst College. “This programme goes beyond language acquisition - it builds confidence, independence, and a deep appreciation for global cultures.”
In keeping with Stonyhurst’s Jesuit values, all pupils follow a Theology course, introducing them to the school’s rich traditions and ethos. Beyond the classroom, afternoons are dedicated to co-curricular activities, sports, PSHE, careers education, and collaborative projects with Stonyhurst peers. Pupils will also take part in local excursions and cultural activities, making full use of Stonyhurst’s Museum and historic libraries, which house over 125,000 artefacts and historical books.
Living in the boarding houses alongside their Stonyhurst peers, pupils benefit from round-the-clock pastoral care and are immersed in a supportive, English-speaking community that fosters confidence and independence. Each pupil is assigned a personal tutor, ensuring individual attention and guidance throughout their educational journey.
A hallmark of the programme is the English language project, where pupils research and present on a topic of individual interest linked to Stonyhurst’s history, culture, or locality, demonstrating both their linguistic progress and engagement with their new surroundings.
“The strong sense of family within the boarding houses ensures that new boarders integrate quickly whilst maintaining pride in their own cultural identity.”

Pupils leave the International Language School with a Certificate of Achievement, outlining their English language competence and full participation in the academic, pastoral, spiritual, and co-curricular life of the College. Whether they stay for one, two or three terms, each pupil gains not only enhanced language skills but also a lifelong connection to an international community.
For families looking for an exceptional British boarding school experience with unrivalled pastoral support, the Stonyhurst International Language School provides a truly unique opportunity.
