On Monday 14th June the Development Team successfully launched the ‘Passing It On' Appeal – to build a new rugby pavilion on Smithfield.
2021/2022 marks the first Centenary of Rugby at Stonyhurst and this exciting initiative recognises this important and historic anniversary. In addition to the construction of a players’ and supporters’ pavilion on Smithfield, a special Centenary of Rugby Tournament and a Gala Dinner will be held on 3rd June 2022. Net proceeds from the Gala Dinner will be dedicated to Sporting Bursaries within The Stonyhurst Foundation.
The appeal reaches out to the Stonyhurst family, both at home and abroad, to help us achieve our fundraising target of £200,000 for the new pavilion.
In recognition of the contribution of Gibraltarian OS and families to Stonyhurst life, and in particular to rugby at the College, the pavilion will be named ‘The Gibraltar Pavilion’. Gibraltar’s connection with Stonyhurst goes back more than 100 years. In recent years Gibraltar has produced several Heads of Line, Committee members, Captains of the 1st XV, and Captains of Netball and Hockey. Thanks to the support of the Gibraltar OS community, we have been able to raise a significant cornerstone amount of the funding required to build the pavilion prior to today’s public launch.
Joey Garcia OS 97 comments:
"I am absolutely delighted to be able to play a leadership role, alongside friends and family from Gibraltar, in this exciting project. Playing Rugby at Stonyhurst has been a privilege for generations of OS, and also provided many of us with deep rooted lessons relating to work ethic, commitment and loyalty which we have carried into a variance of professional careers. I am very confident that this pavilion will enhance the experience for players and supporters alike for years to come."
Simon Charles, Stonyhurst Director of Sport and Head of Rugby, comments:
"The Centenary of Rugby at Stonyhurst, together with the ‘Passing it On Appeal’ for the Gibraltar Pavilion combine to provide an exciting focus for the Games Department in 2021/22. After a year of COVID restrictions the opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to sporting participation, excellence, and pathways, is one which is very exciting. The building of this pavilion will reaffirm that rugby remains at the centre of the Stonyhurst experience."
In addition to the cornerstone support provided by the Gibraltar community, a programme of support from many of our 1st XV Captains from 1959 to the present day has been initiated. Historic 1st XV and Playroom members are being asked to commit to their dedicated ‘Captains’ Campaigns’ and this funding initiative will be important to our overall success.

Former Stonyhurst and England Rugby Coach Brian Ashton MBE comments:
"A pavilion on Smithfield will greatly enhance the ‘Stonyhurst Rugby Experience’ for players, match officials and spectators alike. To those who played – support this as you supported each other on the field"
