Stonyhurst College World Book Day

Reading for pleasure isn’t just about fun, it’s the biggest indicator of a child’s future success, more than family circumstances, parents’ educational background or income*. That is why World Book Day is so important and why we enjoyed celebrating the event from 27 February - 3rd March!

“You are a reader” was this year’s World Book Day theme and this inspired a contest in which pupils were challenged to identify staff readers by the books on their bookshelf. Twenty-five willing staff submitted their lists to The More Library and these were compiled into a quiz booklet distributed through English lessons and playrooms. Several staff asked if they could also take up the challenge, and eagerly joined in with the sleuthing efforts, bobbing into the library and following the new More Library Instagram page for extra clues. It was wonderful to hear lots of literary chat in the corridors as staff were quizzed about the books they had read. The staff winner was Mrs Flegg and pupil winner was Molly (Grammar) and they were very happy with their prizes!

Throughout the week staff and pupils were also invited to bookmark-making workshops in the library, creating beautiful beaded bookmarks for their current reads. This was extremely popular and lots of pupils have asked if we hold more bead craft events in the future, so this is certainly something to look forward to! Future events will be advertised on our new Instagram page so please follow @more_library_stonyhurst for more information.

It is great to see so many pupils and staff regularly visiting the The More Library to choose books, work and study, and also engage in mindful activities and events. We are currently developing a "Reading Well" collection with the support of the Heath Centre, in the library and this aims to support everyone to understand and manage their health and wellbeing using helpful reading resources. More information about this will be posted as it grows and develops and The School Library Association have asked us to produce an article about the project in their "The School Librarian" magazine this summer.

Huge thanks to our team of Pupil Librarians who form an excellent committee of advocates for The More Library. They are doing a fantastic job of rejuvenating our stock and adding some extra sparkle to the bookshelves! If you would like to get involved please contact Mrs Brennan librarian@stonyhurst.ac.uk
