Visit from HEMA Silver School of Arms

It’s not usual to see knights in full chainmail armour striding down the Lower Gallery but that was exactly the sight to greet A Llevel and IB historians recently when they were visited by members of the Silver School of Arms. Students were introduced to weaponry and tactics that were used in early medieval warfare, with the opportunity to try some of these for themselves as well as to ask questions of the experts.

Some of the pupils were also able to take part in a longsword training session, learning the fundamental techniques that would have been a familiar part of a medieval knight’s training. To finish the day in impressive style, pupils were able to watch some of the highly trained HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts) professionals as they staged a display of medieval combat. It was an excellent experience and gave our historians a unique insight into this period of history.

With much thanks to Mr Cook for all his work in organising the day and for the members of HEMA, Silver School of Arms branch for visiting us and sharing their outstanding skill and knowledge.
